The Ladies Journey – The Virtuous Woman

Proverbs 31:10-31

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.  The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.  She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands.  She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a part for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it;
From her profits she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”  Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.

Growing up in a Christian home, I was always told that I should be a virtuous woman. My understanding of this was being a virgin and remaining so until marriage. That’s all that came to  mind and so when my innocence was gone, I considered myself not virtuous and it would often trouble my heart. I thought according to the scripture, I would not find a good husband. The bible says the man who finds a wife, finds a good thing and with my perception on a virtuous woman, I did not think  I was a good thing and so a man will not find a wife in me. What an entangled mind I had. However, after reading the verses above, I am now knowledgeable of who a virtuous woman is and what is required of her.

Apart from all the standards which were given to us in the word like being a chaste woman, a keeper of the home, a good teacher etc, there is one thing that stands out and identifies a woman as virtuous. This is listed in verse 30; ” Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised”. A virtuous woman is one who fears the Lord. One who respects, honour him and abides by his principles. If you are a follower of the Lord, then you should be a doer of his word. If that is so, then all the principles outlined in the bible for a woman would be learnt and practiced daily. What amazed me with this though, was verse 10. Its says that a virtuous woman is hard to find. This is also said in Ecclesiastes 7:28 “which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found”. How can this be? If a virtuous woman is one who fears the Lord and there are so many Christian women in the world, then how can she be rare and difficult to find? To me that’s where the other principles steps in.

A woman of Virtue shall be called WOMAN.

Many of us thinks that, going to church from Sunday to Sunday and being part of every committee in the church qualifies us to be virtuous women. According to the word of God, all these things are nothing if we don’t abide by his word. As I said before, if you are God-fearing, then practicing of the word should also be part of your life. Another thing that stood out to me was the type of husband a virtuous woman possesses. Verse 23 and 28: 23-Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. 28: Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:  Immediately this was clarified by God. Would you find a man of no substance and principle sitting among the ELDERS of the Land? Think about it. Would you find a “commoner” sitting and discussing matters for the USA with President Barack Obama. No way. It’s impossible. So when we find ourselves in relationships that breathes turmoil and frustration, ask yourself before blasting the man if you are being a virtuous woman. Are you abiding by Gods standard because it is quite clear, the type of man God has destined to be with a virtuous woman.

This is my first study of a virtuous woman and so all the insights I would not have just yet but I have shared with you what God has with me. It is time for us to change that verse in the bible that says she is hard to find. We should ARISE and start operating as TRUE women of God. When we fear him and abide by his word, everything else that we long for will fall into place, all in its right timing. So ARISE today and start walking in virtue. It is not too late to become a VIRTUOUS woman since she is simply one that fears (reveres/respect) the Lord. ARISE WOMAN OF VIRTUE.

Reminder: You are the head and not the tail. Above and not under. Everything that you put your hands to will prosper in Jesus Name. Much love – Candace Cudjoe –

  1. Reblogged this on Arise Woman and commented:

    This post has been on my mind a lot lately and I believe God is speaking. So many things to write on, yet my spirit won’t give way. If you read it before, be reminded and if you have not, read and take note.

    When God speak, we MUST, not should but MUST listen. There is no choice in obeying God.

  2. Wow Candace- i finally got a chance to read this article and boy..i’m sooo glad i did…lol!! I think the points you captured and expounded upon were really great- a reflection (truly) of my own. I raise my voice with yours as we claim God’s blessing on us women and i raise my voice in prayer with you that as women- may we arise to what God’s expectation is of us- which is truly to be “a virtuous woman”!! Its not about the mistakes we’ve made or will probably make- its about staying true to God’s word and really being the best “woman” that we can possibly be!!God bless us all!!!
