But all that he did had the one root, OBEDIENCE, in which alone can any son be free. And what is the highest obedience? Simply a following of the Father – doing of what the Father does. Every true father wills that his child should be as he is, in his deepest love, in his highest hope. All that Jesus does is of his Father. What we see in the Son is of the Father. What his works mean concerning him, they mean concerning the Father – George McDonald
The bible says it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrew 11:6) but permit me to say that it is also impossible to please God if we are disobedient to his word. As the bolded sentence above says, everything that Jesus did was sourced from a place of obedience and obedience is the pathway to true freedom. We were instructed to be just like Christ but you hardly hear it expounded upon because man in his limited trend of thinking, deems it as impossible to do but Philippians 1:6 reminds me that God can complete what he started in me. “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”
I grew up hearing my mom say “Obedience is heavens first law” and the more I read the word of God, the more I realize that obedience is a great requirement for a believer of Christ. I want you to look at the two set of verses below and ponder on them for a minute.
Genesis22:18 – In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Philippians 2:5 – 11 – Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
What did you see? I hope it stood out to you like those new pairs of shoes you’ve been eyeing at the mall. Did you see the power of obedience? God spoke to Abraham in Genesis and said BECAUSE you obeyed my voice, in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. In the case of Jesus, though he was God’s son, because he obeyed, he was exalted and now every knee MUST bow and tongue confess that he is Lord. You may say that cannot be looked at because he was God’s son. Think about it. He was a son and just like children disobey today, he too could have disobeyed. The opportunity for disobeying reared its head when he said, “Father if this cup could pass me” but then he humbled himself in obedience and said BUT not my will but your will be done (Matthew 26:39). The agony could have caused him to give up before completing his task but because he operate from a source of obedience he travailed.
With this revelation, I vowed to obey the Father as much as I can. I am now working on my obedience not only because there is power in obedience but because it is only right that I live to please God. Just because he is God. Are you being obedient? Are you being ministered too, to do something? I am sure all of us knows what it is to be disobedient and in many cases, that the repercussions of such act is not worth it. Family, lets make a conscious decision to start obeying the Father. Colossians 2:5 says For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. So what happens when we are not steadfast? We grieve the Holy Spirit. Here we can apply the “Golden Rule” – Do unto others as you would like them to do to you. Would you like to be grieved everyday? As for me, you will get a vehement NO out of me. No one like pains of life, so too should be vow not to grieve the Holy Spirit. We are not perfect but we can strive for perfection in Christ. There is power in obedience. Tap into it and living a life that is pleasing to the creator.
