Daily Digest: The Soldier

2 Timothy 2:4 – No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

While reading “Rules of Engagement” by Dr. Cindy Trimm  this morning, I started pondering on the operation of a true soldier. A true soldier is someone who takes prides in his position and operates in the authority which was handed to him. They  are often promoted after their evaluation proved them to be steadfast, trust worthy and unmovable. So I started searching for verses about soldiers in the army of Christ and I found the verse above. I never knew that verse existed until today. Funny right? Then God took me to the soldiers who are opposite to “true soldiers”. This blew me away simply because to drive the point home, he embedded a verse in my mind that gave me a visual of how important Gods purpose is and how much he will and will not tolerate. As I often tell people, don’t think because he is God he cannot get angry. We tend to forget that he can pour out his wrath on us. Hosea 5:10 – I will pour out My wrath on them like water.

We can’t take God for granted, neither our responsibilities. A soldier who does not adhere to his commands or as the featured verse says, “entangles himself in civilian pursuits”, after numerous offenses and ignoring of correction, will be expelled from the army.

Biblical Proof: Luke 3: 9 – And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Understand that we are the soldiers in Gods army. Our lifestyle determines if we are a true soldier or not or a good fruit bearing tree or not. If we bear fruits that are not worthy to be in Gods presence then the tree is cut down. Even Matthew 5:13 establishes that if we don’t add to the Kingdom, we will be destroyed.“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” God is looking for true soldiers. People who would spend less time focusing on themselves and take up the mantle to guard their brothers and sisters.  We need to look out for each other. Believer – Believer; Believer – unbeliever. We have a responsibility that is only fulfilled through prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5: 17 – Pray without ceasing.

What kind of soldier are you? Will you take pride( and I do not mean haughtiness), in your position? Or will you entangle yourself in a civilian pursuits (things of the world) and be expelled into everlasting death (hell)? Again the choice is yours? What will you chose?

Ephesians 6: 11 – 17 –  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
