Matthew 4:18 – 20 – As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
It’s amazing how these men left the only thing they knew, their livelihood to follow Jesus. Can you imagine being a mechanic all your life and then Jesus tells you, “Come follow me and I will teach you how to repair the broken-hearted through my word”. Will you really leave your trade behind, that brings in finances (one of man’s main concern) and follow him? I’ve read this scripture before, even heard it preached but never really thought of the depth of the matter.
What will I leave behind to follow Jesus’s way? Nothing or no one should take his place, meaning we should put nothing before God, yet I am sure many, if were to be challenged, would find it hard to leave the things they love the most or what they’ve known all their lives behind. Before moving, we will think of all the possibilities of living without the norms of life, even though God said he will provide our every need according to his riches in glory.
Have you ever really given it thought? What will you leave behind to totally surrender and follow Jesus?
