man-with-mouth-taped-shutMatthew 5:34  -37

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne; 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

How often have you sworn in your life? I cannot count the several times I did and did so with little or no knowledge that I was committing evil. Then came these verses to me, like a lightening bolt that pricked the very depths of my heart. All this while I was sinning against God and doing so with ease because I lacked knowledge that it was such a sin. Yes I was told by elders, “You must not swear” but these words to an inquisitive child are translated in their ears as, “You must swear”. For what we are told not to do, that we do, to test its validity or see its point.

However, I am now here to tell you, you must not swear and this is not my order but rather an order from the Lord. For each time we swear, we commit evil against him and this we know, that we automatically fall under curses by choices of disobedience. So as you go through today, ponder on these verses and apply it to your life daily. For our mandate is to please God . For he requires us to be perfect, as he is perfect (Matthew 5:48)
